ABOUT FAT

Bad news!

Scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden say that no amount of dieting would change the number of fat-hoarding in our bodies. The number is set during adolescence and stays the same, regardless of obesity later in life.

Published in the journal Nature, the researchers detail how they tested patients who dropped lots of weight, and found little change in fat cell numbers. The fundamental new insight into the cause of obesity comes from an international team lead by Dr Kirsty Spalding, Prof Jonas Frisén and Prof Peter Arner who found the body constantly produces new fat cells to replace equally rapid break down of the already existing fat cells due to cell death.

They also show, that overweight people generate and replace more fat cells than do lean - and that the total number of fat cells stays equal after a diet program.

A UK expert said eating and exercising remained key for keeping healthy. For example, switching from saturated and trans fats to unsaturated palm oil may help as the oil is a good source of medium chain trigylcerides that speed up the metabolism. It also contains antioxidants and vitamins such as CoQ10, beta carotene and tocotrienols.

Dr Kirsty Spalding of the Karolinska Institute said "It explains why it's so difficult to lose weight and to keep it off - those fat cells aren't going anywhere, and they're crying out for more."
